YMCA of Greensboro
Bright Beginnings is the YMCA of Greensboro’s annual back-to-school initiative designed to support youth as they prepare for the new school year. The Bryan YMCA serves as the designated teen hub for this program, supporting teens ages 13–18 (or rising 7th–12th graders). Through this initiative, eligible teens receive new school clothing through a donor-funded shopping experience at Old Navy, helping them start the school year with confidence. As a Shopping Buddy, volunteers are paired with two teens and accompany them during their shopping trip at Old Navy. Volunteers help teens select appropriate clothing items for the new school year while ensuring purchases align with the provided shopping list and budget guidelines. Shopping Buddies also offer encouragement, support, and a positive experience that helps teens feel confident and prepared for the start of school.

With your support, we can help each child be positioned for success. Thank you for joining us as a Shopping Buddy Volunteer. This year we'll be shopping on August 13, 2026 (a Thursday) from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Plan to arrive a bit earlier, around 4:45pm, for assignments and information. IMPORTANT UPDATE: As part of the YMCA of Greensboro's commitment to child safety, volunteers must follow the Rule of Three during shopping activities. The Rule of Three may include one volunteer with two children or two volunteers with one or more children. YMCA staff will provide supervision throughout the event, and volunteers must maintain continuous supervision by keeping children within sight at all times.

This year, for the Ragsdale YMCA, our shopping nights will look a little different as children will shop with their parents or guardians. Your role as a volunteer will be to assist with any questions families may have, approve items for purchase and ensure each family is staying on track with spending allowances. This will ensure things go smoothly during the check-out process and is a valuable role!

In addition to receiving school supplies, children are also given quality time with a responsible volunteer as they look for new outfits on a shopping trip to Walmart. Meeting at the Y, children are paired with their shopping buddies. At the end of the outing, the kids receive a backpack filled with school supplies.

Volunteers will support our Bright Beginnings shopping event in partnership with Church World Service. This is a one-night event at Walmart where volunteers will assist families as they shop for school supplies. Roles include helping guide families through the store, supporting item selection based on provided lists, keeping the process organized, and creating a welcoming and positive experience for participants. This opportunity is focused on direct support during the shopping event rather than prep or administrative work, so volunteers should be ready to be on their feet, engage with families, and help ensure the evening runs smoothly.
